A disastrous fire at Düsseldorf Airport in 1996 was the immediate cause to prepare for the future. The new Terminal B was rebuilt totally, incorporating a state-of-the-art baggage handling system with today’s most reliable security checks.

Of the total investment of approximately EUR 337 million, about 10% were spent on the baggage handling system. Vanderlande Industries was selected as turnkey contractor based on the most economical proposal and previous excellent experiences.

The system, completed in 2001, consists of:

  • 80 check-in desks
  • 5 kilometres of conveyor lines
  • 4 automatic 100% Hold Baggage Screening (HBS) stations
  • 2 HELIXORTERs providing the required capacity and redundancy. These high-capacity sorting systems are sufficient to meet the expected growth foreseen
  • Early Bag Storage by lanes is provided for 100 bags
  • 12 arrival flat TRIPLANAR carousels

Besides this new Terminal B the partnership between Düsseldorf Airport and Vanderlande Industries has continued to date by working on the A and C Terminals, to help build the future of this extremely modern airport.
