After completing several projects at Schiphol, Vanderlande Industries successfully implemented a BAGTRAX DCV system, including an automated (Early) Bag Storage and 100% Hold Baggage Screening. The strategy of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is focused on developing towards the top against world-class competition, especially for transfer passengers who account for around 45% of traffic and need competitive transit-times.
The modernisation and extension of the airport’s D-pier created the need for a completely new baggage handling solution. Based on excellent previous experiences and the best tender, Vanderlande Industries was selected in 1998 to design, build and service the baggage handling system on compliance with performance requirements together with Life Cycle Costs. The main elements of this solution are:
- 2 independent BAGTRAX DCV systems running on a rail network, powered by linear motors to ensure the required performance and reliability
- A BAGSTORE solution, using an Automated Storage/Retrieve System (AS/RS) for reliable storage of 3,000 (early) bags
- Integrated 100% Hold Baggage Screening
- Multi-layered computer system with interfaces to the airport’s existing systems
- Full-service contract, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
The system, delivered in 2001, has been implemented in an operational environment, in a limited space and linked to the existing systems and infrastructure, all with minimal disruption to the ongoing operations.
