In January of 2004 Vanderlande Industries was awarded a contract from the City of Chicago and United Airlines to implement engineering, manufacturing, installation and commissioning of an EDS (Explosive Detection Screening) system for the Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

The project implementation at Chicago O’Hare includes all of the installation and integration of the baggage conveyor hardware and controls required for all outbound bags in the Terminal One building for United Airlines. The total scope of the project is to implement speed changes to the system and integrate automated EDS’s (Explosive Detection Systems), without disruption to airline operations.

  • A combination of existing equipment and approximately 6,400 feet of new conveyor and associated equipment built in and around an existing operating baggage handling system is required for the terminal.
  • Hold Baggage Screening (HBS) System
  • Additional ancillary equipment includes three CRESPLANAR make-up units and 16
    VERTISORTER.
  • The project also includes speeding up and upgrading of existing main sort lines to accommodate new systems and tie-ins to the existing operational baggage sortation systems for United Airlines.
  • Vanderlande Industries, together with Brock Solutions are also responsible for the supply and installation of the PLC controls/programming, which will interface to the new Baggage Control System (BCS).

Work is completed by September 2005.
