Bahrain International Airport needed a new, automated system to meet growth to 4 million passengers each year. Between 1994 and 2002 it awarded Vanderlande Industries several contracts because of our proven product range and capabilities, and the cost-effectiveness of the designed system.

The system handles departures, arrival and transfer baggage. Some existing equipment was upgraded or expanded for re-use. At check-in, baggage is security screened, identified and weighted. Via pre-sortation by VERTISORTER bags reach the sorting carousels (TRIPLANAR) where pushers sort bags to the correct exit. Transfer baggage is screened at entering the system, coded and then transported to the TRIPLANAR. Also arriving baggage is screened before it reaches the claim carousels.

The bag journey is controlled by the Sort Allocation Computer (SAC) and the Management Information System (MIS) based on the generic Baggage Execution System (VIBES). The SAC determines chute destinations real-time for all bags. The MIS provides an easy to use operator interface. A graphical representation of the system allows the Control Room Operators to monitor and identify process progress and errors immediately.

The solution is simple yet effective. With this project, Vanderlande Industries built the first automated baggage sorting system in the Middle East.
