Zone Picking System (ZPS)

Zone Picking is a man-to-goods order picking concept which can be used for a wide range of applications. Our ZPS order picking system provides a reliable, accurate and structured order picking process, with short order throughput times. Within a zone picking system, the picking area is divided into individual pick zones. Operators are assigned to a specific zone and only pick items within that zone. Products in a zone can be stored in flow racks or in shelving. The replenishment can be done by a QUICKSTORE miniload or manual.

Once picking in a zone is complete the order tote / carton travels via a conveyor system to the next zone (‘pick-and-pass’). Zone picking reduces walking distances during picking and eliminates crowded picking aisles during peak hours. It is highly efficient, especially when operators can pick directly into shipping cartons or totes (pick and pack system).

We have broad experience designing and implementing zone picking system. Zone picking can be supported via a choice of methods within our VISION Warehouse Management System (WMS): paper-based, RF terminals, Pick-to-Light and Pick-by-Voice. Other WMS functionalities include slotting, replenishment strategies, order planning, order release and integrated checking.

Plieger is a leading wholesaler of sanitary, heating, electrical and installation products in the Netherlands. They invested in an automated zone picking system, including a Warehouse Control System (WCS) and pick-to-light displays. This has brought Plieger major benefits, including lower operational costs, higher efficiency and substantial process improvement by picking orders directly into shipping totes. We also implemented zone picking systems at DA Retail, Boston Scientific, TVH, Arrow, Simon Pérèle, Würth and Farnell.
