Schenker selects Vanderlande Industries again for footwear sortation system

In December 2008, Schenker and Vanderlande Industries signed the contract for the implementation of a new footwear sortation system in Denmark. Schenker selected Vanderlande Industries because of the company’s experience integrating the system into Schenker’s host system. The system will be installed in an existing building, reducing the initial investment. It will make optimal use of the available floorspace. It will be constructed on a platform, leaving the area below available for pallet storage. The system will be operational mid 2009.

The goods are imported from the Far East and arrive in containers at the DC. The containers are filled with footwear packed in outer cartons. The containers are unloaded and the outer cartons are placed on the sorter. The cartons are sorted per country/region and stored in buffer lanes. As soon as a buffer lane contains a full pallet load, the cartons are transported to one of two workstations for pallet loading. These workstations are highly ergonomic. Pallets are raised to the employee’s working height. The cartons are lifted with a vacuum lifting device, so the employee does not have to carry the weight. The cartons are kept on the pallets until the shop orders are prepared, depending on the weekly shipping schedule. For preparation of shop orders, cartons are taken from pallets, placed on the sorter, sorted to shop level and palletised. The goods are delivered to shops around Northern Europe.

Schenker selected Vanderlande because of its experience with this type of sortation system and because of the successful cooperation on three other sortation systems in Finland, Sweden and Belgium.

The system will be operational mid 2009.
