Schenker selects Vanderlande Industries again for sortation system

Schenker N.V., logistics services provider (3PL) for a world-leading sportswear brand, has selected Vanderlande Industries for the design and implementation of a new sortation system for its distribution centre in Mechelen, Belgium. The heart of the system will consist of a POSISORTER. The new system will be operational in May 2008. Schenker has selected Vanderlande Industries because of its experience with this type of sortation system and because of their previous experience working with Vanderlande Industries. The company installed a similar system for Schenker in Finland.

The activities in Mechelen zijn can be divided into 3 categories: inbound goods which are cross-docked for distribution in Belgium, goods which are transshipped to the Benelux, Austria, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe and storage activities.
Telescopic boom conveyors load and unload packages. After unloading, packages are weighed, measured and sorted to 14 outfeeds. At the outfeeds, packages are manually palletised and stored in racks. From the racks, individual cartons are picked and brought to an infeed conveyor, which leads all cartons to the sorter. There they are sorted to several outbound telescopic boom conveyors and loaded into trucks. System capacity is 4,000 packages per hour.

With this new system in place Schenker is ready to handle further business growth over the next several years.
